Dental Implants

Are you looking for a high-quality and long-lasting solution for missing teeth?

Dental implants provide the natural-looking and attractive smile that can restore your confidence and let you start enjoying life again.

38th Street Dental in Austin, TX, uses high-tech tools and high-end materials to create the stunning smiles our patients deserve.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed in the jawbone, where it mimics a natural tooth root. Dr. C. Mike Meek and Dr. David J. Tasch at 38th Street Dental in Austin use dental implants from Nobel Biocare®, a leader in the development of implants. For a full tooth restoration, you will need a dental implant, a connector piece called an abutment, and a crown, bridge, or denture to replace the visible portion of your missing teeth. Implants can be used alone or in groups to support a variety of restorations that look like your natural teeth.

How Many Teeth Are You Missing? We Have a Custom Solution

Implant crown illustration

Missing One Tooth?

When a single tooth is missing, one dental implant can be used to hold a crown (artificial tooth), which will beautifully restore your smile and give you a strong, functioning bite.

Implant bridge

Missing a Row of Teeth?

If you are missing a row of teeth, a bridge supported by implants instead of natural teeth is an ideal solution. By using implants, you can avoid altering healthy teeth to restore your smile.

Implant denture

Missing All Teeth?

Dental implants can securely hold an entire denture in place. These dentures will never slip out of place and the dental implants can help stop deterioration of the jawbone.

Fill the Gaps in Your Smile with Dental Implants

If you have a single missing tooth, your dentist will typically recommend a dental implant to restore your smile. This option is more conservative than a traditional dental bridge. 38th Street Dental has helped many patients rebuild their smiles and improve their quality of life through implants.

We Utilize Sophisticated Dental Imaging For Superior Results

Dr. Meek going over x-ray result with patient

3D computed tomography (CT) scanning technology provides your dentist with images of your teeth, soft tissues, and nerves in one scan. Granting us substantially more detailed imagery than a typical X-ray, this resource helps pave the way for safe, effective pre-surgical treatment planning and precise implant placement.

With us, you can feel confident that our state-of-the-art treatment planning technology helps cut down on surgery time and can reduce post-operative pain and swelling. From the moment you visit us for a dental implant consultation, we take every measure to ensure the success of your procedure and your comfort every step of the way.

Do You Lack the Bone Density Needed for Dental Implants? All-on-4 Dentures May Be a Solution

If you have been told you lack the bone density needed to support dental implants, you may qualify for an implant-supported denture using the All-on-4® method. By strategically placing the dental implants, this advanced technique can hold a denture on just four implants. This option not only allows many patients to skip bone grafting in order to receive implants, but also makes it possible to begin wearing an implant-supported denture immediately after implant placement.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you’re considering dental implants, here’s what you should know about ideal candidates for the procedure:

Good Periodontal Health

Patients who suffer from gingivitis or periodontal disease are unlikely to be ideal candidates. If you have a gum infection, your dentist can provide treatment to ensure these issues are resolved.

Sufficient Bone Density

Patients need enough bone density to support and protect the implants. If insufficient jawbone density is keeping you from being able to get an implant, your dentist may first recommend procedures designed to strengthen your jaw.

"So professional and kind."

See the Dental Implant Process

A dental implant-supported restoration replaces the entire tooth structure from root to crown. Made of biocompatible titanium, a dental implant bonds with the bone tissue in your jaw for unmatched stability. Dental implant treatment from 38th Street Dental takes approximately five months from start to finish and provides the next best thing to real teeth.

Dental Implants Treatment Timeline

The dentists at 38th Street Dental in Austin collaborate with specialists at important milestones during treatment to ensure optimum care. While every case is unique, the timeline for dental implants generally follows these steps:
Are you concerned about dental implant surgery? We offer sedation services so you can stay relaxed throughout treatment.
Are you concerned about dental implant surgery? We offer sedation services so you can stay relaxed throughout treatment.

Consultation

We will discuss your goals and go over any health issues to determine if you would be a good candidate for dental implants. We use digital x-rays and 3-D cone-beam scanners to assess the health of your jaw and determine the safest, most stable location for your implants.

Preparatory Treatments

Some people need preparatory treatments to create a healthy foundation for dental implants. This can include treatment for gum disease or bone grafting to increase bone density in the jaw.

Implant Design

We work with trusted oral surgeons for the implant design step. Dr. Meek or Dr. Tasch and the oral surgeon will carefully plan the precise locations for your implants prior to surgery. In many cases, we will use virtual surgery software to “perform the surgery before your surgery.” We also use a 3-D printer to create a custom surgical guide for your procedure.

Implant Placement

We will use x-rays, 3-D printed surgical guides, and computerized tomography (CT) scans to ensure the most accurate, safe, and predictable placement possible. Your comfort will be maintained with the use of local anesthesia and, if needed, sedation.

Osseointegration

This is the healing period when the bone fuses with the titanium implant. The osseointegration period varies from person to person but generally takes from four to six months. If teeth are being restored in visible areas of your mouth, we can usually attach fixed, temporary restorations to avoid gaps in your smile.

Abutment Placement

Once the dental implants have fused with the bone, the abutments will be attached during a minor surgery, which is typically followed by a two-week healing period.

Impressions

After the abutment healing period, we will take impressions of the treatment area and design your restoration, which will be sent to a trusted lab for fabrication.

Restoration Placement

The restoration will be placed in your mouth to assess its fit and your bite. Once you and the dentist approve the restoration, it will be attached to the implants and you can start smiling again.

The Stunning Results of Dental Implant Placement

This patient's front tooth was fractured due to an old root canal treatment. Our dentists coordinated the placement of an implant to hold a dental crown that seamlessly blends with the patient's smile. It is important to note this patient never went without a front tooth and was given a temporary restoration while the implant healed.

Maintaining Your Results

Once your dental crown, bridge, or denture has been secured, you should maintain your oral health by:

  • Brushing twice daily
  • Flossing once daily
  • Maintaining routine dental cleanings

While your restoration may need to be replaced after about 10 years, your dental implant can last a lifetime. Good oral hygiene habits can extend the life of your new restoration and keep your remaining natural teeth healthy.

Dental Implant FAQs

How Painful is Getting a Dental Implant?

You may feel some pressure but should not feel any pain during the procedure. You may feel pain and discomfort in the first three to five days following your surgery. Any pain or swelling can be managed with over-the-counter medication.

Can Dental Implants Decay?

No. Dental implants are made of titanium and are not susceptible to bacteria like your natural teeth. However, good oral hygiene habits should still be maintained to protect your surrounding teeth and the foundation of your smile.

When Is it Too Late To Get an Implant After a Tooth Extraction?

It is never too late! The earlier you seek treatment, the more likely you are to prevent oral health issues like jawbone atrophy, but it is never too late to place an implant after a tooth has been extracted and a healthy smile foundation has been confirmed. If oral health issues are affecting your candidacy, we can address them.

What Is the Success Rate of Implants?

According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, dental implants have a 95 percent success rate. The likelihood of your implants failing decreases when you trust your care to the experienced and skilled dentists at our Austin, TX, practice.
